I thought the grass was greener. I got kicked out of school for a year because of my grades, and I wanted to move to Austin, Texas to chase that dream. After two months in Georgetown, 30 miles north of Austin with my good friend and youth minister Billy Anderson, I moved to Knoxville, Tennessee with my good friend Shane and his wife. I stopped believing in myself in Austin. After about 3 weeks there, I was looking for a job instead of getting gigs and believing that money I was spending on gas and pizza and guitar strings would finally pay off. I wrote this song in Knoxville, while working under Shane at Cingular wireless and being a waiter at O'charlies. I was a horrible waiter and I ate at the food court every day, just getting fat and wishing I was still in Austin, believing in myself like I should have. Shane and his wife were good at me, and sometimes I don't regret going there and spending time with them and meeting new friends. But I knew where I should have been. I gave up on myself way too early. I wrote this song, looking back on my days back home, wishing to go to Austin, but already knowing at the present time that I would be coming home some time soon. I did go to back to Texas after Knoxville, but to work in the middle of nowhere as a naturalist at an outdoor education center. Loved it out there. I am a country boy through and through. I should have believed in myself the first time though.
Dad I think I've got it figured out, I'm gonna' marry that girl and head on out >< What I don't know, I soon will find, dad I sure can't wait to leave this place behind >< Son you sure you wanna' leave your home, cause' the grass is sure green where we tend to roam >< Stop and think about what you're gettin' into, boy take your time and save your money too >< Cause' there ain't many places that look this pretty and a dog, no fence, and a road this gritty >< Worries melt away with a walk to the pond and the stars shine brighter all summer long >< Dad, different is better, just know somehow I'm gonna' be alright, I'm gonna' leave now >< You know I just can't wait to grow on up, time is short, and that's good stuff >< Son you sure you wanna' leave your home, cause' the leaves are falling where we tend to roam >< Stop and stay another night or two, boy take your time, that's what I'd do >< Cause' there ain't many places that look this pretty with a dog, no fence, and a road this gritty >< Worries melt away with a walk to the pond, and the stars shine brighter all summer long >< Dad, I think I've got it figured out, well I'm a' comin' back home, and there ain't no doubt >< I didn't fail but I sure did learn, the world spins the same no matter where you turn >< Cause' there ain't many places that look this pretty, with a dog, no fence, and a road this gritty >< Worries melt away with a walk to the pond, and the stars shine brighter all summer long >< Cause' there's no street lights to make them dim, and over where I was, they don't worship him >< It's good to be back on the narrow road, back to the place where the rooster crows >< Back to my little ole' fishing hole >< Back to the world that I really know
